Meet our studio artists: Lucy Newman

From a cosy corner of the Parlour’s studio comes video artist and animator Lucy. As the first resident artist in the studio when it was founded, the space simply wouldn’t be the same without her. Part Ruscha, part Hockney with a dash of Oriental soy; her dexterous leather shapes are a sight to behold, indeed.
The colours, sights and sounds of her trips from Iceland to Istanbul are explored in her work as much as her curiosity and interest in modern culture
and new technologies.

How did you become an artist?

I have always liked drawing and taking photographs. As a child, I used to draw animals from books using oil pastel on sugar paper, which is fairly consistent with what I am doing now.

Describe a recent project.

I’ve been using the Brushes iphone app to draw with. You can only use your finger plus a brush or eraser, so you have to be very loose and simplify the subject right down. But you have a complete palette of colours with you and you can sketch on the spot wherever you like, batteries permitting.

I’ve also have been working with the intriguing shapes formed by unfinished origami projects. They are abstract but at the same time instantly recognizable as origami and they give the impression of being planned and considered, not at all random.

I am going to get them laser cut from Perspex and try some experiments with casting them. They are small multicoloured flat little sculptures which could be editioned.

Where do you draw inspiration for your work?

Being out and about. Visiting places.

My work environment.

The lifestyle, science and nature and history pages in the media.

A big variety of films.

Who or what are your artistic and professional influences?

Ed Ruscha for turning every day words in to paintings.

David Hockney for his studies of unremarkable hedgerows and grass verges and for exploring new technology.

Photo journalist Inge Morath’s colour images showing stories around the world.

But probably the greatest influence comes from friends and colleagues.

The Papered Parlour has had a big affect me. I now have the urge to find out how to make everything, rather than buy it. With craft projects, you have to work slowly and be very methodical and be prepared to make mistakes at every stage. It is a good way to work.

How would you describe your style?

Graphic.

Strong flat colour.

Figurative.

Observational.

Reserved.

There is some humour in it too.

How has your work evolved?

I’ve become more comfortable in doing what I want and following my instincts.

New web technologies like Blogging, Flickr streams and Vimeo have made it easy to show designs, short notational videos and photography enabling others and myself to get an overview of my practice.

Describe your hometown.

Brighton. The smell of the sea. Sound of the seagulls. Seaside colours mixed with Regency terraces, an ‘oriental’ Royal Pavilion. And being high up on the hills or the Sussex Downs.

If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Zoologist, Ambassador, TV Presenter.

Where else in the world have you lived?

Nowhere else but London and Brighton, but I am making up for it by taking trips, and I can’t believe it but I’ve taken the Trans Siberian Railway from Moscow to Beijing.

New studio artist: Sarah Kelly

Our very newest addition to the parlour is the jewellery designer Sarah Kelly who runs Saloukee. Sarah visited the studios over the summer initially and stayed for a long chat with us. She loved the space from the start and following the publication of her first book, Paper Jewellery, she took the plunge and joined us. Now she’s settled into her desk, surrounded by books, materials and clean, iconic fashion and art photographs to draw on for inspiration.

Shortly after she moved in I asked her a few questions about her intricate designs and influences.

How did you get started? Have you always wanted to be a jewellery designer?

I've been creative for as long as I remember but at school I was always pretty academic. It wasn't until A level that I had my first real chance at proper jewellery making, sitting on a workbench getting my hands and clothes dirty. I found selecting a university course pretty tough and was choosing between studying English Language or Jewellery Design. I opted to follow my heart and didn't regret it.

I graduated in 2005 with a first from Loughborough University and began my career freelancing in London, Paris and Amsterdam and was even lucky enough to design jewellery worn by Angelina Jolie! It wasn’t until 2008 after I’d had some time to travel, work for some other companies and gain a little life experience, that I decided to follow my creative dream and set up my own design business, Saloukee.

Where do you find inspiration?

Costume history, haute couture fashion, interiors, architecture, finding a problem and solving it in a beautifully aesthetic way.

What's one of the most important lessons you've learned about being freelance?

I think to stay true to your vision. Making jewellery from paper poses questions from probably 85% of the people that I meet and I realise the type of jewellery that I'm designing is not your usual high street bling. I simply have to remain focused on my final goal, be a bit stubborn that and know that if I'm determined enough it will happen.

Who are your artistic influences?

Zoe Bradley – paper sculptor who has worked with some high profile advertising and editorial clientele. Her dexterity with paper is jaw dropping and her vision for large-scale work is always so beautifully executed.

Hannah Marshall – fashion designer whose sharp tailored designs are to die for! Not only has she been applauded for her great design in Vogue (my ultimate dream press) but she’s business savvy and still seems to have time to party and smile with the best of them too!

Sophia Coppola - film director and producer to some of the most dreamy films and advertising campaigns I've had the pleasure in watching. Her vision during for the film Marie Antoinette exhibited the perfect frivolity to allow the viewer’s mind to run wild, I am in awe of her talent.

What's your most important tool or material?

My hands … no part of my process would be possible without the use of my hands! I recently learnt to snowboard and have been praying each time I hit the slopes that I come back with both wrists/hands intact!

How would you describe your style?

I'd like to think it's clean, elegant, meticulous, innovative and visual.

If you could do anything else besides being an artist what would you do?

I've had many romantic notions of being an architect. I'm particularly in love with contemporary Japanese design. In reality I'm sure the maths part of architecture would hurt my brain a lot though!

What are you working on now?

My first book was published in November so my head has been in the clouds for a while. I'm excited about being a newcomer to the parlour in 2012 as my plan is to come up with some innovative new jewellery collections which are bigger, bolder and more 'out there' than my previous work. It's great to be around such an energetic vibe and I'm hoping this will give my new making and designing some momentum.

The artist studio is bustling with activity these days at all hours of the day and night. What's awe inspiring to see is how many diverse and engaging projects are all on the go everyday at the parlour.

Here are a few highlights this month from our brilliant studio artists:

Filmmaker Rino Pucci won a prestigious Italian photojournalism award this past month for his short photo documentary, One Day on Two Wheels, following five Londoners and their bikes including an 80 year old who cycles to the pub!

Paper engineer Helen Friel's gorgeous designs were featured in a four page photoshoot in the Stylist a few weeks ago,

and illustrator Kareena Zerefos' work was included in Taschen's Illustration Now Vol.4,

and photographer Sam Roberts has just returned safely from a week of filming in Mali at the International Peasant Conference Against Land Grabbing.

So many incredible projects and stories. We look forward to sharing more updates on the amazing work of the studio artists!

Bespoke Interiors - Handprint your own Wallpaper!

Charged with learning a new skill and creating a unique piece for her home, journalist and self-confessed non-artist Trish Lorenz found her way onto our handprinted wallpaper course with Jemma Ooi of CUSTHOM Design. Over an afternoon Trish and a small group of ambitious budding wallpaper designers created their own bespoke roll of custom wallpaper incorporating an initial inspiration, from fresh flowers to a favourite design on a quilt.

Parlour girls hit the boot sales!

Over the bank holiday weekend we headed out of London to hunt for vintage gems at one of the biggest car boot sales in the country, in Surrey.

People often ask where we’ve managed to find the unusual, kitschy and whimsical pieces that decorate every nook and cranny of the parlour. From the wrought iron staircase, to the stripped wood beams up to the office loft and the gorgeous period mirrors and delicate chandeliers. Many parlour details have come from scouring car boot sales over the years for the perfect find, so below we thought we'd share with you some of our best tips for car boot sale success and links to our favourite boots in the London area.

Parlour girls’ boot sale secrets:

*Wake up early! When we arrived at Hook Road Arena car boot at 7.45am on Bank Holiday Monday the parking area was already a quarter full, so if you’re really looking for something special or antique get there when the dealers do which is whenever the boot opens or as early as you can possibly manage, otherwise stalls will be picked over!

*We love lists: Make a list the night before of what you’d like to find. Whether you’re decorating your kitchen, looking for 50s inspired old signage, London posters or prints, storage units, roller skates in size 9, or a new library, the more specific you are the more focussed you’ll be on the day and the more likely you’ll find what you’re after amidst the mountains of stuff for sale.

*Set a budget: Even with a £10 budget you can find loads of bargains at car boot sales, so decide what is on your list and what you would reasonably pay for it and base your budget accordingly.

*‘Is it on the list?’: The tendency at car boot sales is to get so excited by the bargain prices, haggling with sellers and the sheer volume of things being sold, that you go into overdrive and end up buying a lot of useless, unnecessary junk. Try to stick with the list you made the night before and keep asking, ‘is it on the list?’ Of course even the best of us can't always stick to the list whenever you never know what incredible thing you might find...

*To haggle or not to haggle?: As we were leaving the car boot on Monday I glanced down at a book bin on the ground in front of a stall and saw a book which I’ve been meaning to read for a while. I stopped and asked how much it was and the woman said a pound. I fished the coin out of my purse and handed it to her. She looked surprised, ‘You’re the first person to actually pay the amount I’ve asked!’

It’s true I’m not very skilled at bargaining and when the difference is between a pound and 50 pence it doesn’t bother me to pay what the seller asks, but over the morning I did hear many people trying their luck offering 20 pence when the seller asked for 50. Claire, who is a boot sale pro did manage to barter at almost every table for furniture, cutlery, vintage signs, a 50s working iron and more.

Meet our studio artists! Jess Binns

As we prepare to toast goodbye and bon voyage tonight to one of our multi-talented studio artists, the architectural designer and illustrator Jess Binns, we wanted to tell you just why she's been so great to have in the studio.

For over a year Jess has been an active and friendly presence in the studio, working away at her corner desk under the watchful gaze of her cats whose photos are pinned to her workspace. The name of Jess's design business is inspired by her self-professed cat adiction and by her two cats, Hector and Bailey. Sadly Bailey passed away a few years ago but Hector very much lives on!

Having studied Interior Design at Plymouth College of Art, Jess worked in the industry for five years before moving to London. She expanded into developing her own company in which she has combined her many skills to create a one-stop shop for architectural design and illustration. She works on everything from room refreshers to complete reconfigurations and extensions and draws inspiration from almost any source. She likes nothing better on a rainy Sunday morning than to delve into design blogs to feed her passion. Her clients vary greatly and her portfolio even includes an orangery she designed for Eric Clapton!

Originally from Cornwall, the sea breezes, long horizons and Cornish sandy beaches are never far from her heart.

When not working working away at the studio or on site, Jess teaches Body Combat three times a week - a great stress reliever.

So tonight as we pop the cava and bring out the cake to send Jess off before she joins her boyfriend in South Africa, we wanted to say that we'll miss her friendly presence at the parlour and wish her the very best in her forthcoming adventure!

Meet our studio artists! Kareena Zerefos

As The Papered Parlour studios are expanding, we thought we'd take the opportunity to introduce you to some new, and seasoned artists resident in the studio.

First up is the lovely Kareena Zerefos who joined our studio 3 months ago after relocating all the way from Sydney!

Kareena is a Sydney born, London based artist, designer and self-confessed daydreamer who collects fine bone china tea sets, but prefers to drink coffee.

She has an unhealthy obsession with dangerously sharp 2B pencils, which may or may not be associated with her perfectionist Virgo tendencies… and her pencils, along with a yearning to escape to a world of make believe, lead her to create whimsical illustrative work with a sense of isolation and bittersweet nostalgia.

Having studied design at the College of Fine Arts (UNSW), Kareena’s work often combines traditional drawing with contemporary graphic techniques, with which she has the pleasure of working across a range of commercial projects for the music, fashion and advertising industries.

She loves the word ‘elephant’ (isn’t it just the best word ever?), her Italian greyhound called Pelle and visiting natural history museums.

It’s been two incredible years of fostering creative practice in our growing artist studio, promoting craft and design in the UK and being at the forefront of London’s DIY Maker Movement. Here are a few of the highlights from our second year...

Barclay’s Take One Small Step Competition
After just 12 months of fun and games at the Parlour we beat 3,000 entries to be named as one of the UK’s ten most innovative small businesses – winning £50,000 to put towards the development of our arts space. You helped us to get the word out and voted for us overwhelmingly to win. Thank you again for all your support – we couldn’t have done it without you!

V&A Museum of Childhood Collaboration
Two collaborations with the V&A Museum of Childhood drew huge crowds to the East London venue, with over 1800 of you joining us to for our mini-festivals - Ethical Fashion in the Age of Austerity and It’s Your Write: A Celebration of the Self-Published. Highlights included panel discussions with Shiv Malik and Lindsey German, workshops with Tatty Divine and The Hat Collective & performances by Hannah Peel and Piney Gir. We have even bigger projects in the pipeline – so look out for information about our next festival later in 2011.

The Papered Parlour Studio’s Transformed
After six months of radical DIY, car boot collecting and interior styling we’ve completed the renovation of the Parlour studios. We’ve created a truly magical space for our studio artists and workshop participants to base their creative practice in. We can’t wait to share our creative skills with you in our amazing new space in 2011. Upcoming workshops include DIY Screenprinting (22nd May), Masterclass: Contemporary Quilting (12th June), Contemporary Photography (2nd and 3rd July) and Make Me a Domestic Sewing Goddess (24th July).

Hi! Just dropping you a line from It's Your Write!

It's turned out to be a great event, lots of visitors (three times as many as the last event I attended which ran for 7 hours!) The live music is great and the quality of artists' work on display is amazing. I've sold quite a few of my handmade books, and contributed to the Alternative Press' zine... the museum is pretty amazing too.

'It's Your Write' - The line up keeps on growing...

We’ve confirmed even more participants for ‘It’s Your Write’ next Thursday! We will have a talk from the influential photomontage artist Peter Kennard, who is a Senior Lecturer in Photography at the Royal College of Arts, and is responsible for creating some of the most enduring political images of the past four decades. Kennard has been collaborating with artist Cat Picton Phillipps since 2002, when they joined forces in response to the war in Iraq, and she will be joining him for the event. Kennard has exhibited at the Tate Britain and had solo exhibitions at major centres of photography, such as the Houston Centre of Photography, the National Photographic Archive etc. Here's one of his works which was exhibited at the Rude Britannia exhibition at Tate Britain last year: We have also confirmed that the East London Printmakers, a collective of artists working in print in east London, will be running a night-long drop-in screenprinting workshop which will be free of charge. They will have made up designs of Kate & Prince Will's faces ready for you to screenprint on to posters. You will also have a space to write your own message for the happy couple!

The Papered Parlour Goes East...

It's about time we said a huge thank you to all those who joined us at the V&A Museum of Childhood on 3rd March for 'Ethical Fashion in the Age of Austerity'. We had a record breaking attendance at the Museum and got some really lovely feedback from participants and attendees. If you haven't already seen it, take a look at some of the write-ups following the event.

Tatty Devine's jewellery workshops were so popular they got booked up within half an hour. Good job they came prepared with loads of jewellery thrifted from Spitalfields antique market!

Head down to the V&A Museum of Childhood for the first Thursday of March and join The Papered Parlour for an ethical fashion mini-festival, from 6 - 9pm. Uncover hidden workshops, live music, performance, panel discussion and craft stalls set amongst the museum's exquisite collections. Celebrate the rise of 'slow fashion' as London’s leading eco-journalists, green stylists and ethical campaigners come together to discuss the key issues surrounding this growing social movement. In an age of austerity, can we justify the added expense of buying ethically? Or is Make-Do and Mend set to be the next big trend?

The line up reads like a who’s who of ethical fashion: Fashion designer and V&A Trustee Betty Jackson will be in attendance alongside the Guardian’s ‘Ethical Living’ columnist Lucy Siegle, who will be speaking about her forthcoming book ‘To Die For: Is Fashion Wearing out the World?’. We are thrilled to announce that WE WON the Barclays Take One Small Step Competition!!!

We are so excited at the prospects of how this will allow us to expand the business and continue to passionately support local artists and the craft community!

We are totally overwhelmed by the support we've received from all of you. We can't thank you enough- we really couldn’t have done it without you!

The £50'000 award will allow us to continue to engage the public with more exciting contemporary craft and design workshops and help the craft scene thrive in the South London Community. We'll be investing in new equipment for both our current workshops and new classes, and getting the Parlour cafe open to the public so you will be able to get your hands on our scrumptious homemade cakes all week round. We will also be putting in a lovely new shop front- at last!!

Sunday saw another serene day of quilting led by contemporary designer Cassandra Ellis. We felt privileged to have quilting extraordinaire Jane Brocket, author of acclaimed crafting texts including The Gentle Art of Quilt-making, attend the class.

Marking the last day of voting with a big Papered Parlour 4th of July Party!!

This 4th of July The Papered Parlour recited its declaration of Independence at our 4th of July Party that marked the last day of voting: “We hold these truths to be self evident; tea, cake and the pursuit of craft...”

With free taster Andy Warholesque screen printing sessions, American style quilting, live folk music from finger-picking folkies, delicious red, white and blueberry muffins and home-made iced lemonade, over 100 people were happily entertained all Sunday afternoon!

This budding artist paints a superb Rothko on the Parlour wall.

The Quilters get to grips with our vintage sewing machines and patch their way to quilting heaven...

And the Printers get creative with their squeedgies for some wild Warlhol screen printing!!

The Parlour Girls at the Science Museum

Who says arts and science can't mix? The Parlour girls donned their thinking caps and headed to the Science Museum in South Kensington on Friday to lead some science minded folk in crafty pursuits! To help mark the opening of two new galleries, the girls ran our always popular 'Cute Mutants' Workshop + 'Badge Making' Workshop. Cutting and sewing recycled stuffed toys was our own crafty version of the genome project, one of the new gallery exhibitions. And our sweet recycled fabric badges were made to tie into the new sustainable fashion gallery.

Over 80 participants cutting and re-arranging furry friends never fails to produce amazing results... and there is nothing sweeter than a felt cupcake badge!!!

The Milkshakers

The Parlour girls were out last night at The Last Days of Decadence to support our studio artists, The Milkshakers. The Milkshakers currently hold a residency at the Shoreditch venue and have spent the last two Wednesdays rocking the venue with their smooth 1950's sound. We kicked up our feet to the high-energy rock'n roll and passed out some of our campaign stickers to fellow jivers.

Clara Copley, Parlour Studio Artist Profile

Clara Copley is a portrait and fashion photographer whose rich heritage blends into a unique style. Originally from Lima, Peru, Clara moved to London in 2002, when she was awarded with the Media and Creative Industries Scholarship by the University of Westminster.

After completing a Masters degree in Photographic Studies, Clara started working as a photographer in 2004.

Daisy Tempest, Parlour Studio Artist Profile

Daisy Tempest graduated from Winchester School of Art in July 2008 with a BA Hons in Printed Textile Design, and has since designed for a range of projects, and worked for companies including: Orleans Designs, Zandra Rhodes and Uttam London.

Now living in London and inspired by the bright lights of Clapham (and the Papered Parlour studios of course!), Daisy, along with fashion designer Charlotte Cameron are establishing an exciting print inspired company. Their ethos is simple: 'We believe that life is for enjoying and have created a brand with a sense of humour that aims to enchant, entertain and inspire.' The signature of the company is livening up the plain white tee, like a blank canvas cries out to be painted, a white tee craves to be embellished, decorated and printed on. They are currently working on their new range of designs and prints!

Mia Jafari, Designer Extraordinaire

We are so lucky over here at the Parlour to have the lovely Mia Jafari teaching our sewing classes. Not only is she a brilliant designer, she also always brightens up our space with her eccentric energy!

Coining the term 'digi-broidery,' Jafari describes her style as Eastern embroidery meets digital print.

Feeling the love...

We've had some very sweet mentions recently... not least of which was the shout out in The Guardian yesterday in their article, 'How to make the perfect summer dress.' They suggest visiting our Parlour space as a means to sew your way into fashionable frocks this summer (and we couldn't agree more)!

Also, we had a lovely mention on craftivism.com...

And on Anzu's blog... where Anzu writes...

'With workshops for dress-making, silversmithing, quilting and screen printing as well as designated exhibition space it has a lovely creative feel. They also have the funkiest wallpaper that the designers have screen-printed.'

'We were made to feel very welcome on arrival at the Papered Parlour by Claire, the decor in the Parlour section was adorable, with reclaimed doors as the bar, vintage teacups hanging from the beams and Buddy Holly playing on the original 1950's record player - wonderful!'

Today the Parlour Girls took over the local Barclays on Clapham High Street to continue to encourage the public to vote for us in the 'One Small Step' competition. We were playing some of our old records, handing out delicious cupcakes, and talking to the public about what we do! We always have a blast promoting our space and chatting with the beautiful people of South London...

The Campaign Trail...

We're hard at work in the Parlour strategising our campaign for the Barclay's Business 'Take One Small Step' Competition... Claire is busy thinking up elaborate sporting metaphors and we're all buzzing around contacting everyone we know! Here's a sneak preview of some of what we've been creating to spread the word, garner support, and get people voting! We'll be distributing stickers and flyers around town hopefully next week... so keep your eyes peeled (and don't forget to vote)!

There Goes a Man - Oscar Cainer

Lots of you have now viewed our entry video for the Barclay's Business 'Take One Small Step' Competition and many of you have been asking about the song in the video. It is a lovely ditty done by a friend of the Parlour, Oscar Cainer.
Oscar describes himself on his myspace as 'kinda folky' and his sound is clearly inspired by Nick Drake. His album is called 'In the Corner' and on it you can find the song we used in our video... 'There Goes a Man.' Oscar has been playing the London clubs since he was 15 and used to run a night called 'Oscar's Academy' that Time Out called 'one of the most important new acoustic nights in London.' He now works as the head of sound engineering at Camden's Green Note and operates a recording studio in Muswell Hill called 'Cainer Can Studios.'

You can listen to more of his album on his myspace page, where he also advertises a free album if you send him 'something that will interest him.' Sounds like a good deal to us!

Jia-Chiann Ingrid Hu

We're really lucky to have such talented people working in our studio here at the Parlour... like Ingrid Hu! Ingrid has her MA in Scenography from Central St. Martins College of Art and Design and works in theatre and multidisciplinary design both in the UK and abroad.

Light installation at a Victorian pub converted restaurant in King's Cross

She's currently working on two projects in the UK. One is called 'Spinning Gold' and is a proposal for an interior ceiling piece in the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow. The ceiling is part of a larger scheme to transform the Maternity Unit. The second project is called 'Unlocking Salford Quays' in Manchester and Ingrid is one of five artists working on art that responds to the area's heritage.

Resident Artists' Show

If you've got some time this week, I'd suggest popping down to the Kensington and Chelsea College's Hortensia Gallery for their Millinery and Fashion graduate show entitled 'The Collections.' The renowned department will surely be showcasing some extraordinary work... and I'm told there is the opportunity to purchase the students' pieces.

The Parlour girls are extremely chuffed to announce that we've been named as regional finalists in The Barclay's Business 'Take One Small Step' Competition. Supported by Elle Macpherson, the competition received more than 3,000 entries from across the UK, with The Papered Parlour short-listed as one of three businesses in South London. That means we have a 1 in 3 chance of being awarded 50,000 pounds to aid in the development of The Papered Parlour.

We've been so overwhelmed by all the community support we've received in our first year that we hope we can draw on that support to come out on top in our region. Wood Festival, 21-23 May

We're still beaming over here at the parlour, basking in the afterglow of our first festival! A truly magical weekend was spent at Wood Festival in Braziers Park, Oxfordshire from May 21st-23rd. Britain's Greenest festival was an inspiration for us, with showers heated by a wood-burning stove, a solar-powered stage, and a bicycle-powered disco! There were so many amazing musicians and inspiring workshops (some stand-outs were Circus Skills, Cycle Repair, Composting, and African Drumming classes), we were over the moon to be a part of such an incredible event.

Louise kept busy throughout the weekend leading the workshop, 'Photography: Get Your Camera Off Auto'Claire could be found over in the Kids Tent, running 'Cute Mutants: Sewing for Kids'

All in all, it was a gorgeous weekend filled with gorgeous people. Thanks again Wood Festival!

Our First Corporate Event!

Our first corporate event saw us hosting the lovely people of Hudson Fuggle design consultants. A day of cutting, sewing, and designing saw them crafting Fabric Creatures. These creative folks really got into it and left with 12 new furry friends. The Creatures became the stars of Hudson Fuggle's yearly calendar... and left us delighted with what they accomplished!

Make a Pair of Earrings

Ever drool over the handmade jewellery on Etsy? Want to try your hand at designing something just as gorgeous? Well don't hesitate... we're expanding our silversmithing classes over here at the parlour to make crafting personalized jewellery that much easier. As well as our Make a Ring classes, we've now begun offering classes in earring making. Still guided by the lovely Jenny, our first earring making class was a roaring success... the parlour was absolutely brimming with smiling happy people with newly adorned ears!!!

Screen Printing

If you've never crafted before, the introductory screen printing class here at the parlour is possibly the best way to catch the crafting bug. With the lovely and talented Helen Bridges leading the day-long course, everyone leaves with a fancy bag or t-shirt and the skills to print from home.

Hen Parties

When hens descend on the parlour, there is always the promise of a good time (especially if they indulge in our 'cockteas'... tea infused cocktails). With the record player spinning hits from the 50s, the cockteas flowing, and crafting, crafting, crafting... our hen parties are the perfect way to spend some quality time with good friends. Our three popular packages for discerning hens include silk screening, silversmithing, and millinery.

Make a Dress

There's no time to waste admiring the parlour's gorgeous vintage sewing machines or fabrics, because making a dress in a day is no easy task! However, with the aid of the talented Mia Jafari, even those of us who struggle to thread a needle will have a dress to cherish by the end of the day. Threads and patterns fly around while the parlour is transformed into a veritable fashion designer's studio.

Make a Ring

It's always a good time at the parlour at one our ever-popular ring making workshops. With tasty treats close at hand, our parlour guests turn plain old strips of metal into sparkling and unique rings!

A marvellous workshop run by the ever lovely and talented Jenny Llewellyn will leave even the most delicate of crafters sawing, soldering, and texturing metal like a pro. Trust me from experience, everyone always has a hard time putting down the tools at the end of the day!

Animal Bags

What better to do on a rainy day like today than cobble together a one of a kind animal bag. Just enough room for everything a little one needs to carry around this summer - snacks, a toy or two, and don't forget the sewing kit! All you need are some bits of leftover fabric, maybe some felt or yarn for texture, and buttons for eyes and noses. Accomplished little sewers can manage most of the work on their own.

The parlour has more than once been transformed into a jungle of wild animals thanks to the sewing abilities of the kids in the neighbourhood.

Cute Mutants

Always a popular activity for the little ones (and let's face it, the big ones too)... introducing Cute Mutants! What could be more fun than taking our well-loved stuffed animals and combining them together to make adorable new creations. The head of a teddy on top of the body of a giraffe... why not! Take a pair of scissors to your furry friends and put them back together in whatever way you see fit - the stranger the better!

A great activity for little fingers to learn the sewing ropes... and for those more advanced to perfect their mutant creating technique.

'Come Across Stitch,' London Design Festival 2009

On September 9th, 2009, The Papered Parlour girls proudly rolled out an amazing contribution to the London Design Festival. Housing a designer-maker market, artist talks, a design trail through Clapham, and public art by Hannah Hull, the parlour was definitely bustling that day!

The highlight of the day was surely Hannah Hull's monstrous craft interventions, which transformed the streets of Clapham into a wonderland of giant doilies and massive bunting:

A Master Class with Cassandra Ellis

Good Friday’s first quilting class was a great hit! Antipodean designer-maker Cassandra Ellis adorned the parlour with her inspirational quilts and imparted her secrets of how to create beautiful patchwork. Fabrics of sentimental value were brought in from home and incorporated into the samplers. There were 5 designs to choose from and stacks beautiful silk remnants.

A lovely relaxed atmosphere helped the quilts develop at a great rate and even those with no previous sewing experience left with a beautiful quilted cushion or beginnings of a larger piece. The workshop was such a success we’ve programmed more contemporary quilting classes to run throughout the summer.

Following the success of our 2009 hen parties, we’ve been working hard all winter to bring you a package of suitably elegant options for 2010’s discerning hens. With spring upon us and wedding bells in the air, the parlour girls are ready for a good party and are now taking bookings.

We have craft, we have cake and we have cocktails served from vintage tea pots – what more could you want…? Just select an activity, pick a date and don’t forget the bride to be!

Screen Printing £49 per person
Design and screen print your own bag using direct screen printing techniques. With tips on design and advice on how to print from home, once you’ve started there’ll be no stopping you.

Silversmithing £57 per person
Take a simple strip of silver and transform it into a stunning ring. Working with basic jewellery tools, try your hand at sawing, soldering and texturing metal and leave with a piece you’ll treasure forever.

Millinery £63 per person

A wonderful opportunity to make a beautiful fascinator. Using antique fabrics your fascinator will have a vintage look whilst working with recycled materials wherever possible.

Add on High Tea
After the craft enjoy your own quintessential 1950’s tea party with our indulgent high tea. You’ll be served fabulous home-made cakes and tea from vintage teapots. For a truly decadent experience, choose our alcoholic high tea and we’ll fill our beautiful teapots with delicious ‘cockteas’ (tea based cocktails).
